Writing Prompt

What’s one thing you own that holds deep sentimental value?

My response: My polished boots. I’m a former Marine, and those boots mean more to me than most people would probably realize.

Why the Boots Matter

When I think about something I own that has sentimental value, I don’t think about its price. I think about my boots. They might not look like much to someone else, but I know what they mean to me.

They take me back to my time in the Marine Corps. I think about the discipline that came with being a Marine, the responsibility, and the expectation that even the small things mattered.

Polishing boots takes patience. You do the work, pay attention, and keep at it until you’re satisfied. I still think about that. It’s a simple thing, but it says something about the effort we put into what we do.

What I Still Carry

Being a Marine is part of my story. It isn’t all of my story. I’ve had other things to learn and other paths to follow, but I don’t have to leave that part of myself behind.

That’s why the boots matter. They remind me of a time in my life that helped shape how I think. I can look back on it and still recognize that I’m learning and changing.

I don’t keep them to impress anyone. I keep them because I know their story, and what that part of my life means to me.
